Is GeoGuessr free? Your options explained
Compare official Daily Challenge, Steam Quickplay and OpenGuessr free play, with account requirements, platform limits and a practical choice checklist.

The short answer
You can start a street-view geography game on GeoGuesser.org without buying a subscription from this site. The street-view game is supplied by OpenGuessr, which describes its core experience as free with unlimited playtime. GeoGuesser.org is an independent site, separate from the official GeoGuessr service.
Official GeoGuessr offers limited free access as well as subscription products. Its Daily Challenge, Steam Quickplay and paid map access are different offers. The sections below explain the verified options and which one matches a short daily session, casual duels or repeated solo practice.
GeoGuessr, GeoGuesser and OpenGuessr
The similar names can be confusing. Here is what you are opening:
| Service | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GeoGuessr | The official GeoGuessr service | Current free access, account requirements and subscriptions on its own website |
| GeoGuesser.org | This independent geography gaming site | Street-view play plus our country-size game and Farflung practice edition |
| OpenGuessr | The third-party street-view game embedded here | Its current modes, optional accounts and multiplayer instructions |
Playing here does not create a GeoGuessr account, unlock a GeoGuessr subscription, or transfer your official rankings. Accounts and progress inside the embedded game belong to its provider.

Choose a game for your goal
For a familiar street-view guessing experience, open the GeoGuesser homepage. Look around the scene and use the map to make a guess. OpenGuessr advertises multiplayer too; follow its in-game controls for any available rooms or invitations. Features may change independently of this site.
If you want to practise geography without loading street-view imagery, try the country size comparison game or Farflung practice edition. Both run in your browser without an account. Farflung here has its own question set and scoring; it is separate from the original Farflung service.

What the official Daily Challenge includes
GeoGuessr’s Daily Challenge page advertises free play after sign-up and five refreshed locations. Its help article specifies three minutes to identify each location. That is a useful short daily session; it is not the same promise as unlimited access to every map or ranked mode.
The official reset guidance says the daily reset follows Central European Time, including daylight-saving time (CET/CEST), rather than each player’s local midnight. Finish the attempt before the reset if you are protecting a streak; starting before it is not sufficient. Check the in-game countdown rather than converting from an old timezone screenshot.
Steam free play is a separate option
The current Steam Edition FAQ lists Quickplay Solo Duels, Quickplay Team Duels and a Free Daily Challenge as free modes. It also requires a GeoGuessr Web account. This offers an official route for players interested in casual duels, but it requires installing the Steam edition rather than simply opening this website.
A Steam Pass unlocks paid features in the Steam edition, not the same benefits on the website or mobile app. The FAQ also says Classic Maps single-player is not currently supported in that edition. If your goal is quiet solo exploration of a chosen map, a free quickplay duel is a different experience. Check the current FAQ before paying for a product intended for another platform.
What OpenGuessr adds beyond a solo round
OpenGuessr’s own overview lists account-free multiplayer lobbies, ranked duels, community maps and player-created competitions. It also describes Country Guessr, Image Guessr and optional restrictions such as grayscale or blink mode. These are provider features, not a separate GeoGuesser.org ranking system.
For a first session with friends, agree on the map and restrictions before starting, then follow the current lobby invitation controls. Someone learning to read signs may prefer a normal scene to a blink restriction. If friends are seeing different rules, check the room settings before comparing scores.
A quick choice checklist
| Your actual goal | A useful starting point | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A short official daily session | GeoGuessr Daily Challenge | Sign-up and the daily schedule |
| Official casual duels on a computer | Steam Quickplay | Installation and an account; not Classic Maps |
| Repeated browser practice or a casual group | OpenGuessr, including the embed here | Provider controls, accounts and progress remain separate |
| Geography practice without panoramas | Our country-size game or Farflung practice edition | Different skills and scoring from street-view play |
Before choosing, check four things: can you enter the specific mode, does every participant meet its account requirements, is progress saved locally or in an account, and are you comparing the same map and rules? “Free to download”, “free daily challenge” and “unlimited browser play” answer different questions.
Accounts, phones and saved progress
You do not need to install an app to visit these games. On a phone, landscape orientation can leave more room for the scene and map. Street-view imagery needs a stable connection; an unlimited-play description does not mean offline access.
Our country-size game stores personal statistics in this browser when local storage is available. Farflung stores completed Daily results locally. Clearing site data or changing browsers can remove access to those records. The embedded street-view game manages its own saves and account options.
If the street-view game does not load
Reload once, check your connection, and confirm that JavaScript is enabled. Some browser extensions or school and workplace networks block external maps or embedded games. If it is allowed on your network, opening the provider’s website directly can help establish whether the problem is the embed or the provider.
Avoid repeated reloads on a slow connection. While imagery is unavailable, the country-size and Farflung games offer another way to practise. For your first street-view round, continue with our beginner’s guide.
